IF BERNADETTE PETERS did a series of random readings from back issues of the FARMERS ALMANAC my subscription would already be in the mail (for the extended version). But, I’ve never been able to figure out the choice of a tuba (!?) as the foundation bass in this song, “I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight.” In contrast to Peter’s silky voluptuousness (her voice, I mean) the tuba presents a mildly comic distraction. My surmise is that perhaps the tuba was intended to offer some relief from the unrestrained wantonness of Dylan’s lyrics, which might otherwise have seemed—well, I’ll just say it—simply too “Sordide.“ Or, perhaps it was a nostalgic nod to that New Orleans-street-corner-jazz-band that stomps thru Dylan’s “Every-body Must Get Stoned”; I dunno. But, whatever the motive may have been, the distinctive tone color of Peter’s voice, with its sexy napped-suede finish and nimble, enchantingly nuanced subtleties, gets lost for me when she lingers too long at the lower end of her harmonic register (…where the “nitty-gritty Bernadette” seems to dwell). Yes, Peters ultimately tames the lugubrious elephantine beast with her sultry boudoir blues...no small accomplishment in itself. Still, I would have swapped the tuba for a tenor sax and raised the key a little to give her more room to maneuver at what she always does so very very well.[BTW...if you haven't already seen it, definitely check out the video of Bernadette Peters’ doing her trademark "Broadway Baby" from the legendary 1998 concert at London’s Royal Festival Hall. Rated 5-STARS for "Bang-on Astonishing!"]L.S.
